Green is new black for fashion industry mega show

Next month, the biggest trade show in the world of fashion will green part of its operations at the Las Vegas Convention Center and Las Vegas Hilton. The move by MAGIC Marketplace, expected by organizers to attract 120,000 attendees, will accommodate a growing market segment of ecologically-minded clothing retailers.

The semiannual expo’s new umbrella for eco-fashion, dubbed “Ecollection @ MAGIC,” will include approximately 70 exhibitors representing the fast-growing green market segment and comprising 30,000 square feet of event space.

“We are excited to meet this growing demand by offering domestic and international retailers ready access to the most sought-after eco-fashion resources, while supporting the development of environmental consciousness and its evolution within the apparel sector,” said Chris DeMoulin, president of MAGIC International.

Among Earth-kind features planned by producers of MAGIC Marketplace are recycled booths and “custom green” signage. Attendees will relax in a lounge furnished with sustainable bamboo furniture and "cradle to cradle" fabrics. Also, an installation of recycled art will be on display from "eco chic" jewelers Smart Glass.

Speakers include Nike's VP of Corporate Responsibility, Hannah Jones, and Patagonia's Director of Environmental Analysis, Jill Dumain. A presentation by Organic Exchange, a nonprofit trying to expand organic agriculture, will focus on boosting production of organically grown fibers such as cotton. Lastly, green bloggers and media will be in attendance.

MAGIC Marketplace is scheduled for August 25-27.
